More Work

Seems as though I will be in the office for a while tonight. Got loads of things to do now. Everyone else in the office wants me to do everything on the computer before I leave. Yes i am the only one on Autocad in our office! So I am printing all the work I have done recently so I don't get called back next week. On the good side, I have 5 days off and am going out tonight too. Should be a good crack. An old favourite place of mine from years ago has re-opened, so we are going to check it out. Let's hope it will be as good as back then. Doubt it but worth checking it out. Oh and since everyone else has left for the weekend, I have my music playing on full blast which is getting in the mood :-) Album for the day....... "LITTLE VILLAGE" Xlnt album. Go out and get yourself a copy, you wont be disapointed. Honest! Have a good weekend people :-) Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee xxx

1 day and counting

One more day until I am on holiday :-) Where am I going? Nowhere, staying at home this time. Why? Because spending £1000 in a week just to go to sleep on a sun lounger next to a pool seems to be a bit much just before Christmas. So I am going to go to the local DIY store and get loads of paint and decorate my "Little boys room" at home. That's my room where I have my computer, guitars, keyboard, music, playstation, videos and dvd's etc. Oh and most of my Kiss stuff too. Will probably need another holiday after that but what the hell. I am still looking forward to it. Just to make myself feel a bit better, I have just done a search for holidays in Jersey. I looked up flights from London and Hotels to stay in and it would have cost me in the region of £400. So I now know I am going to save at least that :-)

Small World

Something weird happened last night. Well it was weird to me anyway. Rob has a mate over from the U.K at the moment. Anything weird about that? No. He brought him to the pub last night, weird? Nope. He intruduced me to him by saying, "Marcus this is Marcus my mate from England", weird? Not really, I do know of 6 Marcus' in all now. It's not a very common name but we do exist. No, the weird bit was, I was talking to a mate about my Birthday for some reason and happened to mention it was on the 30th May. That's when the other Marcus said "you are kidding" and got out a drivers liscence or something with his photo and date of birth on. Yup, he was born on the 30th May too. Now I found that weird! O.K I am 7 years older than him but it's still weird. Word for the day : "WEIRD".

Does anyone know what day it is tomorrow? Wednesday 27th October 2004, yes I know that but what else is it? ¼ point to the first correct answer. (Well the answer I am looking for anyway). And no that doesn't mean I will be starting a point scheme! Hmmmm?

Operation

Another thing happening today................ I am going for an operation this afternoon. Just a local anesthetic but still, I hate injections and can't stand people cutting me open with scalpels. Oh and then after that I am going to be stitched up and have a really sad bandage on my neck! Duh! Then whilst looking really stupid (No change there then) the thrift club decides to have a meeting on the same night....... Probably just to have a cheap laugh :-)

A few things today: Firstly I wanted to wish Ceri a Happy Birthday. Have a good one Cezza :-) Don't do too much studying today. Secondly, a mate of mine is launching his web site today. Well it will be advertised in the J.E.P for the next week. So good luck to him with Ruellan Estates. Last but no way the least. Here is to me being on Holiday soon. Can't wait, a whole week off! That makes 2 this year. I must be slacking!

Rolex Spam

Seems as though my email address has been sold off to another bunch of sad losers who think they can make money from home sending out spam. (Calm it Markiss) This time it is people trying to sell dodgy Rolex watches. I have had 8 emails from these Rolex Spam people. But all I had to do is add the word Rolex to my filters and hey presto none are coming in anymore. So if you are genuinely wanting to give me a Rolex for nothing then don't mention it in the email header please :-) Otherwise I won't get it. Then again I have already got a perfectly good Rado so who needs a Rolex anyway?

Star Wars

I learnt something this weekend about Star Wars. Nothing exciting but still thought I would mention it here. Did you know that the line "I have a bad feeling about this" is featured in every episode? Well you do now :-) How sad is that?

XLNT Weekend

Hope you all had a good weekend, I certainly did! So what did I get up to? Here is the short version: Friday night met Rob in the Clubhouse got a taxi to the toad with him and Paula, met up with some mates there. Went to St Peter's Country Inn for a few then back to Paula's for a couple glasses of wine then home. Saturday went to town did a bit of shopping, sorted out a mates computer. In the evening went to the clubhouse again but this time in the bar not the lounge and played pool (Which I won most of my games) then party back at mine which went on 'til 4:30 am ish. Sunday I got up with really badly pulled calf muscles! (Not sure how I did that but it really hurts today. Probably something to do with dancing really pathetically!) Then decided to cut all the branches we had in the drive into logs for the winter. That did my back in! Then down to a friends place for Roast lunch. Was lovely! Then back home for Casserole for dinner (God I was bloated) So bloated that I decided to have some cheese and biscuits too :-) Then watched a really good program called "Fooling Hitler" and finally it was time for bed. Now back to normal at work! Nevermind.

Architects & Web Designers

If Architects Had To Work Like Web Designers

This was passed on by Robert (A Web Designer) to me (An Architect). You would be suprised how many times we get letters like this from some of our clients. It's scarily familliar! Wouldn't it be nice to have a client who knew exactly what they wanted? But then again, that's exactly why we are here. To give advice and head them in the right direction.

Dear Mr. Architect:

Please design and build me a house. I am not quite sure of what I need, so you should use your discretion. My house should have somewhere between two and forty-five bedrooms. Just make sure the plans are such that the bedrooms can be easily added or deleted. When you bring the blueprints to me, I will make the final decision of what I want. Also, bring me the cost breakdown for each configuration so that I can arbitrarily pick one.

Keep in mind that the house I ultimately choose must cost less than the one I am currently living in. Make sure, however, that you correct all the deficiencies that exist in my current house (the floor of my kitchen vibrates when I walk across it, and the walls don't have nearly enough insulation in them).

As you design, also keep in mind that I want to keep yearly maintenance costs as low as possible. This should mean the incorporation of extra-cost features like aluminum, vinyl, or composite siding. (If you choose not to specify aluminum, be prepared to explain your decision in detail.)

Please take care that modern design practices and the latest materials are used in construction of the house, as I want it to be a showplace for the most up-to-date ideas and methods. Be alerted, however, that kitchen should be designed to accommodate, among other things, my 1952 Gibson refrigerator.

To insure that you are building the correct house for our entire family, make certain that you contact each of our children, and also our in-laws. My mother-in-law will have very strong feelings about how the house should be designed, since she visits us at least once a year. Make sure that you weigh all of these options carefully and come to the right decision. I, however, retain the right to overrule any choices that you make.

Please don't bother me with small details right now. Your job is to develop the overall plans for the house: get the big picture. At this time, for example, it is not appropriate to be choosing the color of the carpet.

However, keep in mind that my wife likes blue.

Also, do not worry at this time about acquiring the resources to build the house itself. Your first priority is to develop detailed plans and specifications. Once I approve these plans, however, I would expect the house to be under roof within 48 hours.

While you are designing this house specifically for me, keep in mind that sooner or later I will have to sell it to someone else. It therefore should have appeal to a wide variety of potential buyers. Please make sure before you finalize the plans that there is a consensus of the population in my area that they like the features this house has. I advise you to run up and look at my neighbor's house he constructed last year. We like it a great deal. It has many features that we would also like in our new home, particularly the 75-foot swimming pool. With careful engineering, I believe that you can design this into our new house without impacting the final cost.

Please prepare a complete set of blueprints. It is not necessary at this time to do the real design, since they will be used only for construction bids. Be advised, however, that you will be held accountable for any increase of construction costs as a result of later design changes.

You must be thrilled to be working on as an interesting project as this! To be able to use the latest techniques and materials and to be given such freedom in your designs is something that can't happen very often. Contact me as soon as possible with your complete ideas and plans.

PS: My wife has just told me that she disagrees with many of the instructions I've given you in this letter. As architect, it is your responsibility to resolve these differences. I have tried in the past and have been unable to accomplish this. If you can't handle this responsibility, I will have to find another architect.

PPS: Perhaps what I need is not a house at all, but a travel trailer. Please advise me as soon as possible if this is the case..

Mortgages in Jersey

I know I have mentioned house prices and mortgages in Jersey before but it seems to be a real issue here in Jersey. I have just heard something a little scary recently. Now because house prices over here are just astronomically high there would be no way we could get a mortgage from a normal mortgage shop in the U.K. I think in the U.K they will lend you up to 4-5 times of your annual income. That just wouldn't do over here as that means someone on £25,000.00 a year would only be able to buy a property costing about £125,000.00. May sound a lot but you just couldn't get anywhere for that price over here. Now the reason for this post is that BRISTOL & WEST (Jersey Branch) have just released there new figures for the Island. You can now borrow up to NINE times your annual salary over here to get a house! O.K that would mean getting £225,000.00 that wouldn't get you a house but at least you could get a flat. Not only do they take your income into account but they now also take your parents income into account too! So someone on £25,000.00 with 2 parents can now borrow up to £350,000.00! My question here is: How the hell are they going to afford to eat with repayments in excess of £2500 a month each? This place is getting pathetic. I needed to get that off my chest :-)

Folding T-Shirts

As a bloke, I am fully aware of how to iron my T-Shirts. My only problem is that I only iron my clothes when I need them. So inevitably I have a pile of clothes in my cupboard all the time. The reason being? Because I can't fold T-Shirts for the life of me. If I did do the ironing and then tried to fold 'em, I would just have to re-iron them when I wanted to wear them again. So what's the point? Now for those of you who seem to have the same problem as me, here is a little lesson from some oriental woman showing you how to do it properly and quickly. Folding T-Shirt's lesson. I don't know about anyone else but I have watched it loads and still think she is taking the piss. I just can't wait to get home and try this out. Bet I don't come up with the same result as her! (Can't believe I have just posted about ironing!)

Interesting Facts NOT!

For some reason the Internet has been accessible today! God knows what happened yesterday. All I know, it was well annoying having to refresh every single page, I viewed, about 10 times before I could see it. Next: I am very proud to announce, that I was the winner of the Marble competition on Saturday night. I had some tough competition but Markiss shone through. I think it was because the other players were getting a bit tired tell you the truth :-) But hey! I still won........ And finally: This really is a sad fact. Did you know that it was the 23rd anniverary of the first showing of the Jersey T.V series called "Bergerac" starring John Nettles yesterday? Well you do now! It was first aired on 18th October 1981. How old do I feel right now? Well about 34 to be precise.

Is it just me or is most of the World Wide Web not accessible today? Virtually every page I am looking at isn't available! I have looked in my settings for IE but nothing has changed. I have even tried surfing using Mozilla Firefox and still get the same problem. If I refresh the page about 10 times it finally loads. What is going on? Anyone else getting this problem? I have restarted my computer and logged on again etc etc.

Christmas Shopping

Just thought I would let you all know that I have actually started my Christmas shopping. I started yesterday and intend to do all of it online, as I get stressed out going to town and shopping with 10000 other people. Oh and I wanted to say thanks to Amazon too. They have just made my shopping experience with them a lot easier. They now take off V.A.T for the Channel Islands automatically. So no more waiting for the items to be delivered and then emailing their accounts office and going through all that rigmarole.

Backing up your website

Do you back up your website? Well yesterday I was really pleased that I do. Luckily I had only just backed up my entire site last Tuesday for some reason. Must have known something was going to happen deep down. Well anyway, yesterday I received an email stating: "Dear Marcus, As of this morning we have had major hardware failure on the server which your website hosting account is hosted on. Our engineers are currently looking into the problem and are hoping to have the situation resolved by the end of today. We apologise for the inconvenience this is causing and will hopefully have your site up and running as soon as possible." When I read that I decided to have a look at my site. Nothing there at all! I waited and waited and in the end my site came up but was well out of date. I think it was rolled back to sometime in September! Just goes to show how often my hosting company backs up their servers! Well as I said before, luckily I had backed mine up. so it was just a case of uploading it back on to the server. I can't imagine what I would have done if I hadn't backed it up. So, this is really just a reminder to you all to do the same :-)

Eat my Shorts

Just had a funny email sent to me from a friend. I did a job for him a few years ago and he has obviously had the drawing out recently. I have just remembered what he is going on about. I was designing him an extension for his garage and a bedroom above. It all got passed by the Planning Authorities and has now been built. He said in his email to me "Very funny I have just spotted him in the window!" It took me a while but I got it in the end. I must have been in a funny mood that day because I decided to draw Bart Simpson in the bedroom window, pulling a catapult. I have just openend his drawing up and there he was, still pulling the catapult at me :-) Here is the picture I am going on about. Wonder if the Planning Authorities ever saw it? Tell you the truth I only put him there for Peter to see and was going to take him off the drawing before I sent it into Planning. Oh well, it has just put a smile on my face, that's why I thought I would share it with you guys.

Conditional new post links

If you've used Quick Edit links then you know how handy it is to be able to jump right from your blog into editing a post. Well, another useful thing to be able to do is to go right into making a new post with one click. That's what we're going to set up here. I'll explain it in two parts: how to create the link, and how to show and hide it depending on who is viewing the blog.

Creating the Link
This part is pretty simple. Just log in to Blogger and go to the Create a Post screen, like you normally would to post. Then copy the address from the address bar of your browser. It will look something like this, with your own blog ID in place of the X's:

<a href="http://www.blogger.com/app/post.pyra?blogID=XXXXXX

Now go to your template, decide where you want the link to appear, and make a link like this:
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/app/post.pyra?blogID=XXXXXX">Make a New Post</a>

You can have any text you want in place of "Make a New Post," of course.
Note that you can stop at this point, if you want. Anyone viewing your blog will be able to see the link, but if they click on it, they will need to log in to the appropriate account in order to actually reach the posting page. So the next step is more a matter of aesthetics than security.
Making it Conditional
First of all, make sure that you're using Quick Edit links, and go to a page with one of those links displaying. Then view the source code of the page (your browser will probably have a "View Source" command underneath a "View" menu, or something equivalent). Look through the code until you find a span tag that looks like this:
<span class="item-control admin-XXXXXXX pid-YYYYYYY">

There will be numbers in place of the X's and Y's, of course, but that's the tag we want. Copy it and use it to put span tags around the link you made in the last step, like this:
<span class="item-control admin-XXXXXXX pid-YYYYYYY"><a href="http://www.blogger.com/app/post.pyra?blogID=XXXXXX">Make a New Post</a></span>

Now just republish your blog and you're set! When you're logged in as an admin on the blog, you'll see the link to make a new post. If you aren't logged in as an admin, it will be invisible.
Note: There's one slight catch to this, and that involves team blogs. Admin members will always be able to see this link, but non-admins won't. If you only have one non-admin member, there's a way to get around this. That is to make sure that you are copying the span tag in part two from a Quick Edit link on one of this person's posts. The way it works is that whoever's Quick Edit link we copy will be able to see the link we create, as well as all admins. However, if you have more than one non-admin, there isn't an easy way around it. The options are to (1) make everyone an admin, (2) skip the conditional part of this hack, so that everyone sees the link or (3) just apologize to the non-admin members who cannot use this feature.

Model Aircraft

Split a match stick
Glue together as shown
Collect flies and store in freezer for a few seconds to make dozy
Place glue where your engines (Flies) are going to be placed
Place engines into position
Blow to make sure engines are secure
Sit back and watch the funniest thing you have ever seen in your life
(P.S. I wouldn't personally do this as it seems well cruel to those poor flies.)
BUT! They are pissing me off big time at the moment in the office, so forget what I just said. Glue those pest to the match. The more engines the better! Happy flying.

Google Colours

As I do sometimes, I think of some serious crap. Today is no exception. Today is about the colour sequence in the Google logo. So what do we have here then? We have blue, red, yellow and green. So firstly we have blue, red, and yellow the 3 primary colors. Then we start off with the blue again. Now where does that green come into the equation? I'm pressuming that since it follows the yellow and blue that it is the mixture of these colours together which gives you green. So then we go back to red, what's the next colour in this sequence then? I reckon it is yellow, as above in my Markiss (Google) logo. Why? Well yellow is the mixture of green and red. After that the next colour would be orange as in the mixture of yellow and red. Anyone agree? Or am I just talking crap like normal? Hmmm so what would the next one would be?

Banning marbles because they are made of glass and could cut you? That reminds me. Am having a marbles competition at my place on the 16th of this month with some mates. The slight twist is that we have added one more ingredient.......... Booze!

F*cking computers is the first thing that springs to mind. Got into the office this morning, turned on my computer, started Autocad and what happens? Well, it decides not to work! Loads of settings had changed back to the original version. So all my customised settings didn't work. Now let's put it this way, I have so many customised settings, on my version of Autocad, that the Autocad I use is probably going to get released sometime next year as Autocad 2006 (Yes I know it is 2005 next year but they have already released 2005 for some reason). It wasn't even just my settings that had gone skew wiff either. Even just the "open file", "save as" and "new document" commands etc etc didn't work. The most annoying thing about it was my partner in the business came into my office and asked if he could have a certain drawing finished by noon. "Fat chance of that since I can't even open the f*cker" I said. Anyway, luckily I know quite a bit about the in's and out's of Cad so I managed to get it all up and running in about an hour. I just want to know what would happen to someone in the same situation as me who didn't know the in's and out's. Would they have had to get someone round to fix it? In doing so, wasting days waiting for it to be sorted out. I am sure these software applications are programmed to bollocks up at certain times of the year. I mean I didn't do anything for this to happen. Shut down the P.C the night before with no problems, didn't even download anything yesterday! Anyway, I feel better now I have shared that with you guys. Now for the weekend........ Going out tonight a bit earlier than normal, about 8:30pm I think. Will let me get that extra pint down :-) Have a good weekend everyone. Bye for now.
